Message A metric bolts number is its 'class' which is just a fancy word for grade. A grade 8 bolt, and a class 10.9 bolt are exactily the same in strength, and probabily 'hardness' since their made of the same material. The rating, grade or class, of a bolt is determined by its strength. The only thing determining the 'hardness' of a bolt is what its made of, which also has something to do with grade because it has to be made a certain way to get the desired strength.

If you buy a SAE or DIN bolt from anywhere, and its marked with eather numbers, or the lines, it has to be rated for at least that classes rating, which is the tensile breaking strength.
